"Lo cagarol" ('the snail' in the occitan dialect)
One single entrance, one single very narrow street in the form of a snail shell, winds its way through the fortifications of this magnificent circular village to its tranquil centre and to the ruins of a church and other vestiges. Centuries later, it is difficult to determine the exact reason for the villages’ unique construction, however the main theory is that due to the limited access and several layers of walls between the outside and the centre it would have been difficult to take the village by surprise!
